How to Apply
The Middlesex selection process is holistic, and we seek evidence of a student’s character, curiosity, academic achievement, and interests within the context of their environment and life experiences when making our decisions.

Interview
Schedule an Interview
While an interview is not required, we would be pleased to host you on campus for a tour and interview. Virtual interviews are also available. Please click here to learn more about the admissions visit and schedule your appointment.
International students for whom English is not their primary language are required to take the TOEFL, Duolingo or IELTS, and those who wish to be interviewed must schedule an interview through Veracross. This policy does not apply to students who have attended an international school where English is the primary language of instruction for two or more years or a junior boarding school in the United States.

Standardized Testing
Middlesex will require students to submit standardized test scores in the 2024-25 admission process and accepts current year results from the following tests: SSAT, ISEE, PSAT, SAT, and ACT. We also require international students for whom English is a second language, and who have not been attending a school where English is the primary language of instruction for two years or more, to submit TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo results.
Register for a Test
Test scores must be sent to Middlesex directly from the testing service.
The Secondary School Admission Test (SSAT) or Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE) is required for applicants to grades 9 and 10. Applicants for grade 11 may submit current year SSAT, PSAT, or SAT scores. Middlesex “super scores” the SSAT, considering the highest section scores across all test results.
- Middlesex accepts the SSAT and the ISEE
- The Middlesex SSAT code is 5068; for more information about the SSAT, contact S.S.A.T.B. at 609-683-4440, www.ssat.org
- The Middlesex ISEE code is 220-650; for more information about ISEE, contact 800-446-0320, www.erbtest.org
Middlesex accepts the IELTS Indicator, TOEFL iBT, and TOEFL ITP Plus, Vericant, and Duolingo.
The Middlesex TOEFL code is 8720. Middlesex only accepts scores submitted electronically by the test center. Please contact the test center directly for your official scores to be submitted. In general, successful applicants to Middlesex have a high proficiency in English, which is typically demonstrated by a TOEFL score of 110 or higher, a score of 7.5 or higher on the IELTS, and a score of 125 or higher on Duolingo.

Apply
Complete an Application
All applicants apply online, using either the Middlesex application through Gateway to Prep Schools (Gateway) or the Standard Application Online (SAO). We do not have a preference between the two applications, but we require that applicants submit materials through only one application platform.
The applications require a Candidate Profile or Student Biographical Form, Student Essay Questions, Parent Statement, recommendations from current English and Math teachers (if possible), a Principal/Counselor Recommendation, and a transcript report, including current grades and grades from the previous two years.
If you are not currently taking Math and/or English, you may substitute recommendations from teachers of your other current academic classes (excluding art and physical education) and supplement your application with letters of recommendation from one of last year’s teachers of Mathematics and/or English.
Through Gateway, you may submit an optional Special Interest Recommendation or a Personal Recommendation. If you are applying through the SAO and wish to submit a Personal Recommendation, please have the recommendation writer submit a letter directly to admissions@mxschool.edu. Transcripts and other materials not submitted through Gateway or SAO may be emailed in the format of a PDF to admissions@mxschool.edu.
We do not accept original artwork, scrapbooks, DVDs, or CDs. Instead, please provide additional (voluntary) Athletics or Arts multimedia supplements through the Multimedia section of the Candidate Profile or the Multimedia link of the Student Biographical Form in the SAO. You may share Music/Arts links using this online form. You may share all other links using this online form. Do not delay submitting your application because you are waiting for a website or file to be prepared. In the Multimedia section, note that a link or file will be provided later.
The non-refundable application fee is $80 for all of our applicants, payable by check or credit card using the Gateway application.
The application deadline for all applicants is January 15, 2025. While we prefer to receive your portion of the application by January 15, we recognize that grades, recommendations, and testing may follow, and we promise to issue March 10 decisions to all students who have completed their applications by February 1. If you have questions regarding the timing of your application, please call the Admissions Office at 978-371-6524.
The Financial Aid application deadline is also January 15. We encourage all families to apply for financial aid, if they believe they will need any level of financial support during their child’s tenure at Middlesex. If a family does not apply for aid or qualify for aid upon admission, it is unlikely that the family will receive an aid award in subsequent years, unless there is a significant change in that family’s financial circumstances. Visit our Affording Middlesex page for more information.
