It was a great day for Middlesex athletics as the Zebras hosted ISL rival St. George’s on Saturday afternoon. Boys’ Varsity Ice Hockey slayed the Dragons in overtime for the win, while Girls’ Varsity Ice Hockey, Boys’ Varsity Basketball and Boys’ JV Basketball each came away with hard-fought victories. Girls’ Varsity Basketball turned in an inspiring performance but fell to the Dragons by three.
Boys’ Varsity Ice Hockey: Middlesex 3, St. George’s 2 (OT)
Middlesex Boys’ Varsity Ice Hockey defeated St. George’s 3-2, Saturday afternoon as senior Sam Carlin scored the game winner with 47 seconds to play in overtime. The Zebras took a one goal lead in the first period off a wrist shot by Matt Banks from the top of the right circle. Senior captain Harrison Markell added the Zebras second goal off a one-timer on the power play and in overtime, Carlin stole the puck in the high slot, made a terrific spin move and beat the defenseman and the goaltender five hole for the overtime winner.
Girls’ Varsity Ice Hockey: Middlesex 3, St. George’s 2
Senior captain Leah Olson scored two goals and assisted on the third in her final game in a Middlesex uniform to lead the Girls’ Varsity Ice Hockey team to victory over the St. George’s Dragons, 3-2. In the first period, Olson ripped a slapshot from the point and sophomore Sage Nye was there to put away the rebound for a 1-0 lead. Just six minutes later, Nye fed Olson on the powerplay for a 2-0 lead. In the second, Olson went coast to coast and beat the Dragons goalkeeper top corner for the 3-0 lead. The Dragons refused to quit and scored twice in the third period but strong defensive zone play and goaltending by Caroline Silk ’18 thwarted the Dragons comeback hopes. In a game plagued by 19 penalties, the Zebras concluded their 2014-2015 season on a well deserved victory.
Girls’ Varsity Basketball: St. George’s 49, Middlesex 46
MX fell to rival St. George’s in a back and forth game in which neither side had a greater lead than five points. As it was senior day, emotions were running high for our three seniors Kate Wood, captain Jenna Doherty, and captain Kat Barry. Combined, they contributed an astonishing 11 seasons to the program. MX took a 5 point lead going into the half as sophomore Ari Odom hit a three pointer at the buzzer. Foul trouble plagued the team throughout the game as two starters fouled out with plenty of time to play. Jenna Doherty played the game of her life as she was everywhere both defensively and offensively, generating several steals and a career-high 19 points. Ericka Ekhator chipped in 14 points and numerous rebounds to the cause. Though the overall record wasn’t what we were hoping, the effort and determination were in keeping with high standards of Middlesex.
Boys’ Varsity Basketball: Middlesex 61, St. George’s 53
Junior Austin Dorsey made seven 3-pointers en route to 23 points as Middlesex Boys’ Varsity Basketball topped St. George’s 61-53. Senior captain Ben Cherington added 14 points with three 3-pointers and senior captain Hamza Usman finished with 11 points. The game was highlighted by an emphatic dunk by Usman that caused the student fan section to erupt. The boys’ team finished 13-12 on the season.
