Middlesex Athletics Completes Banner Week

The final week of the regular season was marked by overwhelming success for the Middlesex athletics program, with our fall sports teams accumulating an ISL Championship, a New England Championship, multiple playoff berths, and a varsity sweep over rival St. George’s.

The momentum all started with Varsity Volleyball, who clinched a share of the ISL Championship on November 4th with an epic comeback win against Lawrence Academy. Riding a 10-game win streak, the defending New England Champs have earned the #1 seed in postseason play and will vie for their second consecutive title starting with a quarterfinal match at home against #8 Kingswood Oxford on Wednesday, November 15th at 4pm.

Following Volleyball’s lead, Girls’ Varsity Cross Country secured a title of their own, besting 25 other teams at the DIII New England Championship race last Saturday. Sophomore Gabby Walsh led the varsity team in 4th place overall (in a field of 157 finishers), while Jillian Robertson, Meena Menon, and Alene Fernandes finished 1st, 2nd and 3rd, respectively, to help the JV squad win a championship as well. Boys’ Varsity Cross Country, meanwhile, finished 2nd in their New England Championship race, and freshman David Latham won the JV Boys’ Championship.

While the Cross Country teams raced in the New England Championship, the Boys’ Varsity Soccer team extended their unbeaten streak to 14 with a 2-1 win over St. George’s, and Girls’ Varsity Soccer dominated the Dragons in a 5-0 victory. Both soccer teams have qualified for the NEPSAC Class B tournament; at 2pm on Wednesday, November 15th, Boys’ Soccer (#4) will take on Rivers (#5) at Middlesex, and Girls’ Soccer (#8) will look to upset #1 Pomfret in Connecticut.

Over on the turf, Varsity Field Hockey closed out their season with a 3-1 win over the Dragons. Finally, Varsity Football concluded the action-packed day with a thrilling 17-14 over St. George’s, with senior Pat McGann kicking a game-winning field goal into the autumn sunset.
