Longtime teacher, coach, and mentor Ned Herter ’73 P’97’99’02 to Retire in June

After 38 years of distinguished teaching, coaching, and mentoring Middlesex students, Ned Herter ’73 P’97’99’02 will retire this June. Fittingly, The Class of 2017, to recognize all Ned has done for them and the School over his career, has voted Ned to be their graduation speaker! Middlesex will celebrate Ned throughout this spring and into next fall with the following events:

Ned will coach his last home game at Herter Field on May 24, 2017, at 3:00pm against The Governor’s Academy, and we will mark the occasion with a few words and thanks.  Ned’s final game for Middlesex will be played at St. George’s School in Newport, Rhode Island, on May 27 at 2:00pm.

On June 10, Ned will receive that Henry Cabot Lodge, Jr., ’20 Distinguished Alumni Award during our Alumni Weekend Mx2 Capital Campaign Celebration here on campus.  Later that day, he will be honored by the Middlesex Alumni Association with a reception on the CirclePlease click here for full information on these events.

Next fall on the afternoon of Sunday, September 24th, we will hold an alumni lacrosse game on Herter Field  followed by a dinner in Ned’s honor.  If you would like to indicate your interest in attending the game and/or dinner, please email us at [email protected] and include your current mailing address.

Finally, we will also present Ned with a book of recollections and well-wishes from alumni. Thanks to everyone who has already submitted a letter of appreciation to Ned; if you’re interested in contributing, please email the note of appreciation by June 1 to John Morrissey at [email protected].  Please call the Alumni Office at (978) 369-5110 with any questions.

We hope to see you on campus soon for one (or more!) of these celebratory events. In the meantime, you can read a wonderful article about Ned’s coaching career in the latest issue of the New England Lacrosse Journal.
