Katie Bull ‘15 Summer Arts at the MFA

This summer I worked at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, MA. I was able to take this wonderful opportunity due to the financial support from the Middlesex Alumni Association Board. I worked in the Education Department at the MFA and taught children ages 3-18 about art and I gave tours of the museum. I am very grateful for the support from the MX Alumni Association Board because this internship only increases my interest to work in museums. Without the help from MX I would not have been able to have such a meaningful summer.

While at the MFA, I received training in VTS (visual thinking strategies) and other educational methods which I then used to teach art history. I learned a lot about museum curation, which I have a particular interest in, because I was able to connect and work with curators from various departments at the MFA. I gained experience working with the museum staff in the education department and in many other departments, which has developed my communication and professional skills. In addition, I wrote lesson plans and researched different topics to create new tours.

I also conducted research and helped with the Artful Healing Program at the MFA, which allows museum teachers to visit children in hospitals and do art projects with the children. I found this to be very fulfilling and worthwhile. I loved going to hospitals in Boston and helping kids feel better through art projects.

The work I did at the MFA helped me confirm that I want to pursue a career in art museums. I loved working with the people at the museum and I hope that next year I will be able to make an impact at a museum!
