Common Sense Hosts 4th Annual MX Maple Brunch

On Sunday, April 30, 2017, the fourth annual MX Maple Brunch was held in Ware Hall.  Sponsored by Common Sense, the campus environmental group, the event is intended to raise awareness of sustainable, local food resources while giving students an opportunity to enjoy a delicious and healthful breakfast.  This year, as before, the sweet treat went like hotcakes.  For some, it was their first ever experience with “the real thing,” and preliminary side-by-side blind taste tests indicated the local, campus-made syrup was a clear winner over its corn-based imitator.

While most applied the liquid gold to their fresh waffles and chocolate chip pancakes, other uses were observed as well, ranging from the classic bacon/syrup combo to the less conventional syrup ‘n’ eggs.  In all, just over a gallon of MX maple syrup, which was processed from approximately 70 gallons of Sugar Maple sap over the span of two weeks, was consumed in the space of an hour.  Common Sense will be following up this event with another themed study break on the first weekend in may, a “Candlelit Snack,” reminding the community to turn of the lights, shut down devices, and use less electricity.  The group hopes to raise recycling rates on campus as well, through a re-education program that includes a possible visit to a local recycling facility.
