Middlesex runners Garrett O'Toole '14 and Viraj Deokar '16 distinguished themselves at the national level over the weekend. Garrett competed in two elite races this weekend. First, running with the top U.S. fourteen milers in the adidas Grand Prix: Dream Mile, he finished in 4:06.06. His performance was affected by several near falls, but he didn't let this affect his race the next day at the US National Championships in Greensboro, NC, where he achieved an All-American 5th place in the 800 meters with a time of 1:46.68 (a new personal record). His time is only a half a second off the all time New England half mile record. Garrett is currently the #1 miler in the country and the fastest New England prep miler in history with a time of 4:01.89, a record set at the Adrian Martinez Classic in Concord, MA a couple weeks ago. He is also US #1 at the 1500m, #4 at the 3000m, and #8 at the 800m and must now choose between these events as he will try to qualify for the US National World junior team in early July in Eugene, OR. He will also bring his talents to Princeton University this fall.
Viraj had raced at New Balance Nationals Indoor back in March 2014, in the Emerging Elite two-mile event. Now a championship-level runner, Viraj raced the two mile in 9:04.62, placing eighth behind a field of mostly older runners. He became the second fastest sophomore 2-miler in New England history! Congratulations to Garrett and Viraj!
