Students Raise Funds for Typhoon Relief

Middlesex School

Just over two weeks ago, one of the most powerful storms ever recorded, super typhoon Haiyan, raged through the Philippines.  According to the Philippines National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Center, the storm has claimed over 5,000 lives, destroyed over a million homes, devastated millions of dollars of crops and infrastructure, and displaced nearly four million people to date.

Middlesex junior Bettina Lichauco, who hails from Manila, immediately seized the opportunity to help her country.  By organizing a Typhoon Haiyan Relief Raffle, Bettina and her fellow student organziers raised $3,000 in raffle tickets sales and direct donations.  Students and faculty bid on items and services donated by Middlesex students, faculty, and parents, ranging from gift certificates to local businesses and dates with seniors to a Bruins game and a month of milk-and-cookies delivery.

The funds raised will benefit an international organization and a Philippines-based organization, both of which will be carefully selected by faculty and student organizers.   Thank you to all who supported this effort!
