Longtime Middlesex Board member and past parent Mary Ann Tynan P'97 passed away peacefully at her home in Dedham on November 3rd after a battle with cancer, with her daughters by her side. Head of School Kathy Giles remembers Mary Ann as "an extraordinary person who championed schools and their people," and a "generous, thoughtful, and principled" member of the Middlesex Board of Trustees.
Mary Ann graduated cum laude from Smith College, and worked with Wellington Management Company, LLP for 26 years as a partner, Senior Vice President, and Director of Regulatory Affairs. She was an industry expert in investment advising, and served on numerous Boards in the financial and healthcare industries.
Her legacy to Middlesex included 19 years of service on the Board of Trustees beginning in 1994, when her daughter Emily was a sophomore, through May of 2013. President of the Board of Trustees Pete Olney '66 P'00 '00 remarked of Mary Ann, "She had a deep reservoir of understanding of Middlesex, from the uniqueness of its traditions and culture to the details of its finances. She was passionate in her support of faculty in the quest for educational excellence. She was a reassuring presence in the financial turmoil of the last decade and consistently spoke with the kind of clarity about important issues that helped the Board to make better decisions. We will deeply miss the warmth she radiated and her ever-present sense of humor."
Last year, Middlesex planted a baby copper beech tree near Hallowell and Bryant Paine house, dedicated to Mary Ann and her late husband Pat in recognition for their stewardship of our beloved campus and trees.
With the support of Mary Ann's daughters, Emily '97 and Cate, a memorial will be held on Sunday, November 24, starting at 11 AM in the Middlesex Chapel. For questions regarding the service, please contact John Morrissey at 978-371-6523.
