Remembering Kevin Landry '62 P'88'89'94

Middlesex School Kevin Landry

Sadly, the School received news that Kevin Landry ’62 P'88'89'94, who had been suffering for the past three years from advanced lung cancer, passed away at his home early Thursday, Aug 1, surrounded by his family.  An enthusiastic, energetic, and generous alumnus and former trustee of Middlesex School, Kevin will long be remembered as the 2012 recipient of the Henry Cabot Lodge ’20 Distinguished Alumni Award, a 2010 inductee to the Athletic Hall of Fame, and an involved parent who, along with his wife Barrie, saw their three children graduate from the School: Chris ’88, Kim ’89, and Jen ’94. Like her father before her, Kim now serves as a Middlesex trustee.

Kevin graduated from Harvard in 1966 and, upon receiving his M.B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, joined the venture capital firm TA Associates. Four years later, he became a general partner and was later named managing partner and CEO in 1983. Under his tutelage, the firm invested in many successful companies, displaying what the Boston Globe described in 1990 as “the Midas touch, breathing money and life into most of the great Massachusetts start-ups of the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s.” Today, the firm recognizes Kevin as “a pioneer who helped define the growth private equity business” and one who “personified TA’s culture of hard work, origination, intellectual honesty, meritocracy, and integrity.”

At the same time, Kevin was always a pillar in the community – especially at Middlesex, where he joined the Board in 1975 and, apart from a brief hiatus, served until 2009, spending 21 of those years as treasurer. His devotion to the School spanned decades, and in the truest sense of the word “countless,” Kevin gave countless hours to the work of strengthening the School he loved.  His voice, as a trustee, was smart, strong, and persuasive, and he kept his focus and the School’s focus on student and faculty and staff experience.  His philanthropic support of causes and institutions that were dear to him and Barrie is legendary. Here at Middlesex, they have supported financial aid and faculty funding; the Investing in Girls program; and the Landry Center, which provides for the School two international squash courts, a lovely viewing gallery, and a warm respite for chilled hockey fans. Kevin was also a driving force behind the addition of tennis courts and turf fields in the East Fields and generously supported numerous other initiatives, as well. Most recently, he and his family set up the Landry Family Challenge to encourage Middlesex parents, past and present, to support the School’s needs. Kevin, Barrie, and their family have also been major benefactors to Harvard University, Westover School, Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts, Massachusetts General Hospital, UNICEF, and Maranyundo Initiative.

Kevin’s dynamic leadership and devotion made a profound and lasting impact on Middlesex, and his family can count on the strength of the community’s affection and gratitude, as well as the support of many lifelong friendships, in the days and years ahead.  Condolences may be sent to the family at: http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/kevinlandry

The memorial service will be held on Thursday, August 15th, at 11 AM at Harvard University's Memorial Church.
