Although the school year has just begun, Middlesex athletes have been hard at work all summer preparing for the fall 2011 season.
Both the boys’ and girls’ soccer teams traveled to Europe at the end of August, putting their skills to the test against some top competition abroad. Meanwhile back on campus, both the football team and girls’ field hockey had a solid four days of training to help them gear up for what will undoubtedly be another exciting fall.
The girls’ varsity field hockey and boys’ varsity soccer teams are looking to return to tournament play in November. Narrowly missing the championship title to Thayer by a score of 1-2, the field hockey team knows what it takes to solidify their place in the tournament. After suffering a heart breaking loss against Kimball Union Academy in the quarter finals, the boys’ soccer team is bound and determined to make it to play-offs for a second year in a row.
Coming off of their best season in program history last fall, the boys’ varsity cross-country team is excited about starting a new season with a team of veteran runners. Girls’ cross-country is hoping to repeat the success of their previous season by bringing home another New England championship trophy.
After an undefeated season last year, the future is looking bright for the JV field hockey squad. And with a record of 12-1 in 2010, the girls’ JV soccer team has high expectations for 2011.
In their final game of the season in the 2010 campaign , the varsity football team tied fellow ISL rival St. George’s 36-36 in Newport, RI. This November, Middlesex will host “St. George’s Day” and the football team is eagerly anticipating playing on their home field.
With opening league games beginning on September 24th against St. Mark’s, teams across campus are diligently preparing to face their opponents. Athletes and coaches alike are fully aware of the hard work that lies ahead, but they’re determined to build on the successes of past seasons in order to have a great new year.
Good luck Middlesex!
