Every summer, Middlesex students embark on all kinds of adventures. Thomas ’13 spent his summer exploring his passion for music. His summer began with the good news that he earned a position in New England Conservatory Preparatory School’s top student orchestra, the Youth Philharmonic Orchestra (YPO). World-renowned conductor, Benjamin Zander, leads this orchestra. Only the best student musicians in the Boston area are lucky enough to play a part. After learning the good news of his acceptance, Thomas embarked on an eight-day concert tour of Eastern Europe. He performed in Hungary, Slovakia, Vienna, and Prague.
Upon his return to the US, Thomas then participated in the Greenwood Chamber Music Camp in western Massachusetts. This is a five-week intensive chamber music camp led by the Chiara String Quartet with a masterclass from the Juilliard String Quartet. And if that were not enough, Thomas then went with Music Adventure to perform a chamber music tour of Italy!
After a full summer of music-making, Thomas has no plan to slow down. This year he will be performing Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony and Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite with NEC’s YPO, with a live radio broadcast and a feature on the Discovery Channel. And, of course, the Middlesex community will have the good fortune of hearing his contribution the Middlesex Chamber Ensemble and recitals throughout the year.
