Construction Corner: 2017 Summer Update

It’s been an exciting and rewarding summer on campus as we put the finishing touches on one major project and began work on another!

The Rachel Carson Music and Campus Center

The Rachel Carson Music and Campus Center became the newest addition to campus on June 10th.  The building was transformed from the old central heating plant into a state-of-the-art teaching and performing facility. The building features a sustainable systems such as a geothermal heating and cooling system, a green roof, and View Dynamic Glass. With movers having relocated the Music and Spanish departments into their new space, we are excited to open the building to students this fall.

Theatre Renovations

C E Floyd Inc. began renovations on our theatre on June 12th.  Over the summer they disconnected a web of utilities that lay underneath the Bancroft Courtyard, dismantled the visual arts classrooms, theatre shop, plaque studio, and the old Clay Science addition off the rear of Eliot. The renovated theater will feature two levels of seating and comfortably fit our entire student body, faculty, and more for performances, assemblies, guest speakers, and other events.

Cellular infrastructure

Over the past three years the school has worked within the Town of Concord’s processes to relocate cellular infrastructure that has been on campus atop the existing smokestack for the past 20 years.  The cellular infrastructure is being relocated due to the central steam plant’s change in use from a facilities and operations plant to the Rachel Carson Music and Campus Center.  In the past year the school has partnered with Industrial Communications, an industry leader in wireless communications, to ensure a smooth relocation.  On August 10th, the Town of Concord Zoning Board of Appeals approved Industrial Communication’s application to construct a monopole behind the hockey rink for the cellular infrastructure.

Other upgrades

Over the summer we have taken advantage of some new vacated spaces on campus to update and repurpose. The porch off of Stufac has been renovated and will be a fantastic place to enjoy food from the grill. Four new trees were planted along the circle to replace four other trees that were in serious decline. New energy efficient windows were installed into classrooms along the English and Math Wings. The old music classrooms in the basement of the library were renovated into a new home for the Alumni and Development team. The old Spanish and A&D offices were demolished to make way for the new Danoff Visual Arts Center, and we have begun renovations of the Wood Theater.
