Alumni Weekend 2018 Recap

Alumni representing eight decades of Middlesex descended upon campus for Alumni Weekend 2018 on May 11 and 12. The festivities began on Friday evening May 11 as alumni and their guests gathered under the Alumni Weekend tent to reconnect while enjoying a delicious clambake provided by Woodman’s of Essex.

Saturday’s agenda started early with breakfast gatherings for the 50th Reunion Class of 1968 as well as the Old Guard (classes who have already celebrated their 50th Reunion). The Old Guard classes gathered in the Terry Room, where they heard from current students about their Middlesex experiences and compared and contrasted them to their own. The Alumni Memorial Service in the Chapel drew a good crowd and was ably led by Rev. Melissa Watt Tustin ’93. Next, Head of School Kathy Giles P’06’09’11 and Trustee Chair Steve Lari ’90 provided an update in a State of School address in the beautiful new Danoff Recital Hall within the Rachel Carson Music and Campus Center. At the conclusion of this gathering, Victor Atkins ’63 received the Henry Cabot Lodge 1920 Distinguished Alumni Award, which was accepted on his behalf by Barrie Landry w’62 P’88’89’94 GP’18. The morning concluded with the induction of three new members of the Middlesex Athletic Hall of Fame: Justin Oates ’98, Rob Borden ’00, and Ned Herter ’73 P’97’99’02 H’17. The ceremony was the last for Hall of Fame Nominating Committee Chair Curt Curtis ’62, who was recognized for his passion for and dedication to the Hall of Fame.

Guests escaped the rain and cold for a hearty lunch under the tent before venturing out to watch both varsity lacrosse teams win handily. The Danoff Recital Hall offered a respite from the gloomy skies with a musical performance that highlighted the extraordinary talents of many current Middlesex students. The recital featured the formal dedication of the piano within the Danoff Recital Hall in memory of former faculty member Sarah Megan P’10’14, a gift of North Whipple ’04. The on campus proceedings wrapped up with a recognition of retiring faculty member Carrie Bolster P’11’14, who was honored by the Middlesex Alumni Association for her 35 years of service to Middlesex.

The weekend wrapped up with individual class parties ranging from the 70th Reunion Class of 1948 to the 5th Reunion Class of 2013. Each class enjoyed the opportunity to spend time together in and around Concord and Boston.

Thanks to all the alumni who made the effort to be with us and please mark your calendar for Alumni Weekend 2019 on May 10 and 11, 2019.
