Music
Exceptional music resonates across the Middlesex campus throughout the year and reverberates in the individual and collective memory of the School.
Visit the Chapel for melodic concerts from our Jazz Orchestra, Chamber Ensemble, select Small Chorus, and Chapel Chorus (an “open-to-all” chorus that comprises about a third of the school).
Head over to our new, state-of-the-art Rachel Carson Music and Campus Center, where you’ll find soundproof studios and professional musicians giving private lessons in almost every instrument imaginable from flute to harmonica, guitar to ukulele. A third of our students likewise take music lessons during the year (and it’s not the same third as the Chapel Chorus).
Walk through our Terry Room, and you may be treated to an impromptu a cappella jam as the nationally recognized Bateman’s Bullfrogs and MXolydians sing tunes from their latest studio album.
Every other year, the Art and Music Departments co-sponsor a trip to Europe over spring break with a breadth of musical offerings and opportunities. In 2015, the group traveled to Venice, Milan, and Florence. They visited museums like the famous Uffizi in Florence, went to the symphony and opera, rode in gondolas, witnessed glass blowing, and marveled at the architecture of the Duomo in both Milan and Florence, among many other activities. See photos from the trip on their blog, which also includes highlights from the department’s trip to Paris in 2013.
The Music Department is devoted to ensuring that every musician, from beginner to expert, finds the resources to develop (and a venue to showcase) their talents. Check out the Music Department courses available. Of course, when it comes to demonstrating the breadth and quality of our department, notes speak louder than letters. View videos of choral groups, instrumental groups, and other performances throughout the music section of the website.
