Community Engagement

Direct Contributions
In appreciation of our longstanding partnership with the Town of Concord, Middlesex School made the following voluntary financial contributions for Fiscal Year 2025:

• $140 for The Concord Independent Foundation dba The Concord Bridge
• $1,500 for the Adolescent Behavioral Health Unit at Emerson Hospital
• $2,500 towards the gift to the Thoreau Street Playground renovation
• $50,000 for the Concord 250 Tree Memorial Project
• $50,000 for the Concord Police Department for the purchase of body cameras

Local Enrollment and Use of Campus

Middlesex currently enrolls 51 day students from Concord and Carlisle. Local families and organizations also make regular use of our facilities:

• The Memorial Chapel, the Bass Arts Pavilion, and the Rachel Carson Music and Campus Center host public performances and art shows for a wide range of local artists and groups, including the Concord Chorus.
   
• Our athletic facilities — including our rink, courts, and fields — are used at discounted rates by Concord-Carlisle youth sports programs. Many Middlesex faculty also volunteer as coaches.
   
• Middlesex also welcomes local residents to Bateman’s Pond and the Estabrook Woods trail system year-round. 
   
• In 2025 Middlesex was honored to host our first Green Summit, which included environmental presentations and workshops by students, faculty, and representatives from the Town of Concord, Concord-Carlisle High School, and Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources, to name a few

Community Service and Engagement

Community service is central to our mission. Over the past year, Middlesex students have taken part in a wide range of initiatives, including:

• All-school Community Service Day and a Senior Community Service Day, with students volunteering at local farms and nonprofits
   
• Fundraising and friendly competition with the Wounded Warriors’ sled hockey team
   
• Participation in Concord’s “Kicks for Cancer” and “Mighty Moose 5K” fundraisers, donating over $3K towards the causes.
   
• Youth in Philanthropy, a class that awards grants to youth-focused nonprofits in partnership with the Foundation for MetroWest.
   
• Volunteer support for organizations such as Open Table, Habitat for Humanity, Drumlin Farm, Harlem Lacrosse, Toys-for-Tots, and local conservation efforts

Economic Impact

• As a residential school with a global reach, Middlesex brings more than 4,000 visitors to Concord each year for major events like Family Weekend, Alumni Weekend, and Graduation. 
   
• We estimate these visitors generate over $5 million annually for local businesses, hotels, and restaurants.
   
• With daily shuttles to Concord Center, our boarding students support local businesses throughout the year.
   
• Middlesex employs roughly 200 full-time, many of whom are proud Concord residents. These Concord residents earn approximately $6.9M in salary which is available to be spent in local establishments for food, clothing, household items and other goods and services.
   
• Middlesex School has a tuition remission program that allows children of faculty to attend Middlesex tuition-free. This is an expensive program for Middlesex, costing $1.5M in 2025-2026.  For the Concord school system, that is the equivalent of 23 high school students that Middlesex School is happily educating, saving Concord $613,237.96 according to the DESE per pupil expenditure based on the latest 2023 profile.  
   
• This past year Middlesex contributed to Concord $385,000 for the building permit to construct the fieldhouse which is currently under construction.
   
• Middlesex tries to use Concord based vendors when possible in the academic and operational aspects of the school and expended over $1.3M with the Town of Concord and Concord based businesses.
