Middlesex School All-School Read Weekend
September 20-21, 2019
The Ethics of Opportunity
Each September, Middlesex School students and faculty participate together in the All-School Read Weekend (ASR). This weekend celebration provides an opportunity to discuss topics of personal and political significance that engage our imagination, our conscience, and our intellect, and to look critically and creatively at ourselves, our communities, and our world.
This year’s theme will be “The Ethics of Opportunity,” and we will consider such elements as education, economics, and privilege. When we return to school in September, we will post two short stories on our school’s library website for the students to read: “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut and “The Ones Who Walk away from Omelas” by Ursula LeGuin. These digital texts will constitute our reading preparation for the weekend (which will save both money and the environment), and we will welcome several outside speakers to campus to talk about the myriad and constantly evolving elements of the ethics of opportunity.
