For many of us, Valentine’s Day represents the ultimate Hallmark holiday: obligatory cards, candy, and flowers that cause stress for many a suitor. For the last few decades at Middlesex, however, Valentine’s Day signals the popular junior class fundraiser: flower deliveries! One recent graduate said, “Valentine’s Day stinks. The only good Valentine’s Days I ever had were sending flowers at Middlesex.” Junior class leaders organize the purchase, sale, and delivery of approximately 1,200 carnations and roses. Members of the community send a flower to their teacher, advisee, teammate, friend, coach, romantic interest, secret crush… anyone! Juniors tag flowers with a hand-written message from the sender and deliver each flower to its lucky recipient during the class day. Every year the juniors order more flowers than the year before, and every year they can’t meet demand and sell out. It is one of the most popular fundraisers on campus!
