When Jon Fortmiller was at Middlesex, he designed St. George’s Day t-shirts and programs for concerst and plays. Inspired by teachers like David Lang and Malcolm Russell, he went on to double major in Visual Art and Art History at Brown University. While in college, Jon helped start a t-shirt and clothing design company called Yellow Planet, and he was hired by Brown University Theater to design posters. His honors thesis project consisted of plaster figures inspired by the statues he saw during his semester abroad in Florence, Italy.
After gradating, Jon worked as a graphic designer and art director at Next Jump, Inc. He soon realized, however, that he would be happier if he became a teacher like his father, Hugh Fortmiller. In 2001, Jon started working at Kent Denver School in Colorado, where he is still currently teaching a variety of subjects: drawing, painting, photography, digital art, and filmmaking. Jon also works as a freelance graphic designer, artist, and filmmaker.
Jon’s artistic style evolved out of his eclectic background in his studies of art, as he now layers together drawings, photographs, found objects, and sculptural elements.
