Students Visit the ICA, Boston

ICA Field Trip
ICA Field Trip

On Sunday October 10, 2010, a group of thirteen Middlesex students accompanied by art teacher, Stacey McCarthy, traveled to the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston to see the Foster Prize exhibit.

Upon arriving, we excitedly hurried into the main lobby, where we were immediately overwhelmed by Francesca DiMattio’s large installation painting “Banquet”. I was personally struck by the manner in which DiMattio’s composition gives the viewer the feeling of controlled chaos through its complicated maze of patterns and geometric shapes.

We proceeded to make our way to the main gallery where we were surrounded by the work of 8 contemporary artists competing for the Foster prize, including work by former Middlesex faculty member, Daniela Rivera. We also toured an exhibition by Charles LeDray. Three installations in his exhibition stood out to me in particular - these were his compilations of “thimble-sized vessels” - hundreds of tiny vessels of differing shape, texture and color were piled together exploring the idea that these objects together ask the viewer to imagine what they could be. We left the ICA with a renewed sense of what contemporary art can explore.
